NSW: 25th March Greek Independence Day (2015)

NSW: 25th March Greek Independence Day (2015)

The Greek Independence Day celebration started at Martin Place on Sunday 22 March at 1:30pm with a Memorial Service and laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph. This was followed by a spectacular and joyous procession by the thousands including schools and other community organisations led by Police escort, the Greek RSL Sub Branch and Greek Australian Scouts of Sydney from Martin Place to the Opera House. In celebration of Greek Independence Day, many students of Orthodox Day Colleges and afternoon Greek language schools came superbly dressed in traditional Greek costumes holding banners and Greek flags.

This celebration encompasses both a historical and spiritual holiday. March 25 represents the anniversary of Greece’s struggle for Independence in 1821 after some 400 years of Ottoman occupation. The official date commemorating the Revolution was chosen for its religious significance, as it coincides with the Feast of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and told her that she would bear the Son of God.

The program included:
1.30pm Memorial Service and laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph, Martin Place.

2.00pm Procession of schools and other community organisations led by Police escort, the Greek RSL Sub Branch and Greek Australian Scouts of Sydney from Martin Place to the Opera House.

2.50pm Formal program in the Sydney Opera House Forecourt featuring:

• Performance of national anthems and traditional songs by the Combined Choir of the three bilingual Greek Orthodox Day Colleges of St Spyridon (Kingsford), St Euphemia (Bankstown) and All Saints (Belmore).
• Performance of traditional Greek dances.
• Brief addresses by dignitaries.

Dignitaries that were present:
• His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia;
• Representatives of the Australian Federal Government and Opposition;
• Representatives of the New South Wales Government and Opposition;
• Greek & Cypriot Diplomatic Officials;
• Other federal, state and local government representatives.

The Doctoral Thesis of Archbishop Stylianos of Australia

The Doctoral Thesis of Archbishop Stylianos of Australia

Republished 50 Years After It Was Written

50 years ago, in 1965, Archbishop Stylianos submitted his doctoral thesis to the University of Athens on the topic of The Infallibility of the Church in Orthodox Theology, which was recognized for its excellence. In this thesis, His Eminence clearly shows that the ‘infallibility’ of the Church is to be identified with its very essence, which is correct faith.The Orthodox Church is genuine and true, because it retains its essence - namely its faith - integrally and without watering it down.

He underlines, however, that his thesis does not exhaust the topic, but rather that it aims to be a springboard for “more complete research on the infallibility of the Church” in Orthodox theology. The fact that this study has now been republished in the original Greek in which it was written (by Apostoliki Diakonia, Athens) will certainly assist a new generation to approach the profound theological thought of Archbishop Stylianos, a great theologian of our times.

Copies will shortly be available for purchase at our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Book Centre.

MAJOR FEAST DAYS OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH

Monday March 8, 2015

A training program for the special religious education volunteers of the Greek Orthodox Archdioceses was organised at St Nicholas, Marrickville.

Over 60 volunteer Scripture teachers were welcomed by the parish priests, Fr Nicholas Bozikis and Fr Christodoulos Economou. In attendance also were Fr Constantine Varipatis the representative of the Archdiocese on the Inter-Church Commission for Religious Education in Schools, Fr Prochoros Anastasiadis from St Raphael at Liverpool and from Canberra, Fr Seraphim of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The program was organised to provide training for the publication "Major Feast Days of the Orthodox Church". This complements the special religious education curriculum with additional information for primary school classes.

Fr Christodoulos spoke on the importance of teaching the major feast days and Mr Andreas Boucas indicated the use of icons in teaching. Associate Professor Angelo Karantonis showed teachers how to use hymns to teach feast days. Ideas for teaching were outlined Mrs Kandia Tagalakis the Scripture Coordinator at St Euphemia and Mrs Evangelia Vasili, Coordinator at St Nicholas, provided detailed directions on how to use the booklets.

Copies of the major feast day booklets and workbooks are available directly from St Nicholas parish.

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese thanked the parish and its co-workers for this initiative and especially the hardworking philoptochos for their hospitality. The spokesperson pointed out that in many homes there is inadequate knowledge of the elements of the Orthodox faith and especially its great feasts. Many of those who grew up with these traditions have passed on and a new generation weclomes this information. The aim of Special Religious Education is to offer a community service freely to Orthodox children in State schools.It reaches out to over 5000 children each week.

DEFROCKED CLERGYMAN IN SYDNEY

DEFROCKED CLERGYMAN IN SYDNEY

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia wishes to make known to all faithful members of the Church that Mr Savvas Pizanias is a defrocked clergyman of the Holy Metropolis of Kalymnos, and has no relationship whatsoever with the Canonical Church worldwide.

Our faithful therefore need to exercise caution, so that they are not led astray by the mentioned audacious pseudo-cleric, who is exploiting all that is sacred and holy in our Faith, including the name of the Patron Saint Savvas of Kalymnos.

Please see attached the official letter of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew confirming that Mr Pizanias was defrocked as a clergyman some years ago, and is now a layman.
