St Nestor the Martyr of Thessaloniki

Christ 2nd April

The Holy Martyr Nestor of Thessalonica suffered in the year 306 AD during the reign of Maximian in the city of Thessalonica, together with the Great Martyr Demetrios of Thessalonica (commemorated October 26).

When emperor Maximian challenged Christians to wrestle with his beloved champion Lyaeos on a platform built over the upturned spears of the victorious soldier, St Nestor went to the prison to his advisor St Demetrios and requested a blessing to fight the barbarian. With the blessing and prayers St Demetrios, St Nestor prevailed over the fierce Lyaeos and hurled him from the platform onto the spears of the soldiers, just as the murderous pagan would have done with the Christian. The enraged commander gave orders to execute the holy Martyr Nestor, and sent a guard to the prison to kill St Demetrios who had blessed this deed.

Dismissal Hymn (Fourth Tone)

Your Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for You received the prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from You, our immortal God. For since he possessed Your strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' powerless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since You are merciful.

Kontakion (Second Tone)

You contested well; hence, you have inherited immortal renown, wise Nestor, and you have become Christ the Master's excellent soldier by the holy and fervent prayers of the Martyr Demetrios. Thus, with him, do not cease to pray for all of us.
