Commemorated on December 30th
Holy Righteous Martyr Anysia
St Anysia, who was from Thessalonica, was the daughter of pious and wealthy parents. After their death, she passed her life in virginity, serving God by means of good deeds. One day, as she was on her way to church, a pagan soldier approached her and asked her to accompany him to the temple of the idols, but she refused. When he began to drag her with him, she spit in his face and confessed Christ. Filled with anger, he thrust his sword into her side and slew her, in the year 298 AD, during the reign of Maximian.
Because of the Apodosis of the Feast of the Nativity on the 31st December, the hymns of St Melania the Younger are transferred to this day.
Dismissal Hymn of the Feast
Your Nativity, O Christ our God, has shined the light of knowledge upon the world; for thereby they that worshipped the stars were instructed by a star to worship You, the Sun of Righteousness, and to know You, the dayspring from on high. O Lord, glory to You.
Dismissal Hymn of St Anysia
Joseph was amazed
O Lord Jesus, to You Your lamb cries with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, You I love; and seeking You, I now contest, and with Your Baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for your your sake, that I may reign with You; for Your sake I die, that I may live in You; accept me offered out of longing to You as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since You are great in mercy.
Dismissal Hymn of St Melania the Younger
In you the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother; for taking up your cross, you followed Christ, and by your deeds you taught us to overlook the flesh, for it passes away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore, O righteous Melania, you spirit rejoices with the Angels.
Kontakion of the Feast
On this day the Virgin comes to the cave to give birth to God the Word ineffably, Who was before all ages. Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing the gladsome tidings; with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him Who is willing to be gazed on as a young Child Who before the ages is God.
Kontakion of Saints Anysia and Melania
On this day the Virgin
A doubly shining lamp of truly mystical brightness shine upon the Church like a high-towering beacon: you with beams of martyr's glory, O Anysia; you with rays of great ascetic deeds, O Melania. Now together you are honoured by Christ your Bridegroom for your travails in His Name.
Another Kontakion of St Melania the Younger
You Who was raised up
Being illumined in your soul with the bright rays of Him that shone forth to us from a Virgin, with virtues you was brilliant, O all-lauded one; for having dispersed on earth your corruptible riches, you stored up for yourself greater riches in Heaven; and in ascetic labours you shined; hence, O Melania, with longing we honour you.
